Kilimanjaro Trekking Lemosho Route for 7 Days
ITINERARY DESCRIPTION BY DAY
Day 1 : Arusha – Mti Mkubwa Camp.
We go through the rural countryside for around two hours after breakfast to reach the Londrossi Gate. We drive through a variety of countryside with open vistas of the plains to the Lemosho road head where the appropriate park registration procedures are completed at the Londorossi National Park gate. Lemosho Mti Mkubwa Camp is our base camp as we begin our ascent through the forest trail.
Londrossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650 m); 3-4 hours walking.
Day 2 : Mti Mkubwa – Shira Camp
As we leave the forest behind, the trail steadily climbs while offering expansive views to the Shira Plateau’s rim. a full day of steady, slow-moving hiking up to Shira Camp.
Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira Camp (3,550 m): 6-7 hours walking.
Day 3 : Shira Camp – Barranco Valley.
Today’s trek includes a gradual ascent and sweeping vistas. After a hearty lunch at the bottom of the Lava Tower (4,600 m.), we drop to the bottom of the Great Barranco valley as we travel around the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing beneath the Lava Tower and the last portion of the Western Breach (3,900 m.).
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3,900 m.): 5-7 hours walking.
Day 4 : Barranco – Karanga Valley.
We arrive right below the Heim Glacier after a strenuous ascent up the eastern side, where we might be treated to some breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro. Following a steep descent into the alpine desert of the Karanga Valley, we have a strong ascent to Karanga Camp. This is separated from the southeast slopes of Kibo by the Great Barranco Wall.
Barranco Camp to Karanga camp (4,000 m): 4-5 hours walking.
Day 5 : Karanga Valley Camp – Barafu Camp.
We choose the Traverse Route today, which ascends the Barafu Ridge. We ascend slowly to the last camp before your final ascent day.
After a fairly early night, the rest of the day is spent relaxing in preparation for the last ascent.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,600 m): 3-4 hours walking.
Day 6 : Barafu Camp – Summit – Mweka Camp.
Before midnight, in the shadows, get up. A moderate, steady pace will bring us to Stella Point, which is the rim of the main crater, at a height of 5735m. We start out with a hard climb through loose volcanic scree that has some well-graded zigzags. We’ll take a little break there to watch the sunrise over Mawenzi. The main peak (5,895 m), which is the highest point in Africa, is two hours away from here along the crater rim for those who are still in good spirits. We descend to Barafu in an astonishingly short amount of time, stopping at Barafu Camp for some refreshments before continuing to descend to Mweka Camp.
Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp (3100 m): 13-15 hours walking.
Day 7 : Mweka Camp – Arusha
Successful climbers will collect their summit certificates at Mweka gate after a leisurely stroll through the rainforest. We return to Arusha Karama Lodge after lunch.
3–5 hours of walking from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate.
Departing Day
Arusha to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your flight home, a leisurely trip to a Zanzibar beach, or a safari—we may discuss these options on the day of your arrival.
