We travel from the hotel to the National Park gate to complete the appropriate procedures before starting our walk. The hiking track starts out by climbing through a stunning tropical jungle. We have the chance to witness blue colobus monkeys at the higher end of the woodland line. We arrive at the first camp at Mandara in the late afternoon for dinner and the night.
Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut: 4-5 hours walking.
Day 3 : Mandara Huts – Horombo Huts: | Mooreland
Elevation: 2740m/9000ft to 3690m/12,100ft
In the beginning of the trip, there is a steep ascent through the forest, but soon the trail opens up into moorland, where there are fantastic views of the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks in clear weather.
Mid-afternoon finds us in Horombo Hut, where you may unwind and take in the breathtaking views of the area surrounding the camp.
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut: 4-6 hours walking.
Day 4 : Horombo Huts – Kibo Huts: | Semi-Desert
Elevation: 3690m/12,100ft to 4695m/15,400ft
We ascend very gradually as we approach the Saddle, a lunar desert located between Mawenzi and Kibo. Till we get to Kibo Hut (4,700m), which is where we’ll spend the night in a cozy hut, we’ll walk slowly.
After a fairly early night, the rest of the day is spent relaxing in preparation for the last ascent.
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut; 4-6 hours walking.
Day 5 : Kibo Huts – Summit – Horombo Huts: | Glaciers, Snow Capped Summit
Elevation: 4695m/15,400ft to 5895m/19,340ft
Descent to 3690m/12,100ft
Before midnight, in the shadows, get up. Our ascent starts out steeply on loose volcanic scree with some well-graded zig-zags, and a moderate, steady pace will get us to the rim of Gillman’s 5,685 m main crater. We’ll take a little break there to watch the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are in good health can make the three-hour round trip to Africa’s highest point, Uhuru peak (5,895 m), from here around the crater rim. Once you’ve had a chance to take in your success, we drop to Kiko Hut incredibly quickly. We then pause at Kibo Hut for a break and continue to descend to Horrombo Hut.
Kibo Hut to Summit to Horombo Hut: 13-15 hours walking.
Day 6 : Horombo Huts – Marangu Gate: / Rainforest
Elevation: 3690m/12,100 to 1830m/6000ft
