4-Day Mount Meru Trekking
Welcome to Tanzania! Thank you for choosing Summit Planet Expeditions. Mount Meru, the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, is about 20 km east of Arusha town, inside Arusha National Park. The mountain is 4,566 meters tall. It has one trail to the top, which usually takes 3 days to climb, but 4 days is better to help your body adjust. Many climbers use Mount Meru to get ready for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut
After breakfast, we leave from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha around 7:30 am and head to Momella Gate. After making the payment, the climb begins with a picnic lunch along the way. We reach the first stop, Miriakamba Hut, where you’ll have dinner and stay overnight.
- Miriakamba Hut: 3.5 hours, 13.8 km (8.6 mi)

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut - Saddle Hut
After breakfast, we continue the climb to the second stop, Saddle Hut. This section is much steeper than the earlier part of the trek. In the afternoon, you have the option to hike up to Little Meru and return. You’ll have dinner and stay overnight at Saddle Hut.

Day 3: Saddle Hut - Summit - Saddle Hut
Wake up at midnight and have a cup of tea before starting to attempt the Big Meru peak. Proceed to the summit across the rocky path. Return to Saddle Hut for a full breakfast. The rest of the day will be spent resting. Have lunch, dinner, and your overnight stay at Saddle Hut.

Day 4: Saddle Hut - Momella Gate
Leave Saddle Hut and descend to Momella gate via the first hut (Miriakamba). You will then be transferred to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi before your journey home or your onward trip to Zanzibar.
Momella Gate: 6.5km (4mi)
Elevation: 3,560m (11,680ft) to 1,597m (5,240ft)
Altitude lost: 1,963m.
Main destination: Mount Meru | No accommodation

Cost Includes
- Park Fees – All entry fees, camping fees, rescue fees, and government taxes
- Accommodation – 4 nights in mountain huts (Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo)

- Transportation – Round-trip transfers from your hotel to Marangu Gate and back to Moshi/Arusha

Cost excludes
- Personal Gear: sleeping bag, warm clothes, hiking boots, gaiters, trekking poles, rain jacket, etc.
- Flights: International and domestic flights to/from Tanzania
- Travel Insurance: Required for the climb (covering emergency medical, evacuation, and high-altitude trekking)
- Visa Fees: Tourist visa for entry to Tanzania (if applicable)
- Tips for Guides & Porters: Recommended tipping is $200-$250 per climber for the entire team
- Extra Accommodation: Hotel nights before or after the climb (can be arranged separately)
- Personal Expenses: souvenirs, extra snacks, bottled drinks, and other personal items
- Drinks: soft drinks, alcohol, and other beverages not included in meals
- Medical Care: Any medical services required during or after the trek
- Emergency Evacuation: In case of early descent or emergencies (usually covered by insurance),
- Optional Extra Activities: Such as a trip to a hot spring or safari (available upon request)
- Laundry Services: Laundry at huts or hotels
- Hotel or Transport Extensions: Additional nights before or after the trek
- Porter Tips: Porter tips should be given directly at the end of the trek
- Internet/Wi-Fi: Available at hotels but not on the mountain.
