Tour Overview
The Machame Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and rewarding trekking routes. Beginning from the southwestern forests, climbers ascend through lush rainforest, heather, and moorland zones, crossing the Shira Plateau and tackling the iconic Barranco Wall. The route continues beneath Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers before summiting via Barafu and descending the Mweka Route. Known for its beauty and diverse landscapes, Machame offers a thrilling challenge and a spectacular approach to Africa’s highest peak.
Itinerary
Elevation: 1,800 m → 3,000 m
Distance: 11 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

Your adventure starts at Machame Gate. After registration, you meet your guides and porters. They prepare your luggage and supplies.
You begin walking through the rainforest. The forest is green, wet, and full of big trees. You may see monkeys and hear birds. The trail can be muddy, so good hiking boots are important.
The walk is not very steep, but it is long. You go slowly and take short breaks. This helps your body get used to walking.
You arrive at Machame Camp in the afternoon. Your team prepares hot food and sets up your tent. In the evening, it becomes cooler. You eat dinner and rest early for the next day.

After breakfast, you leave the forest and start climbing into the moorland area. The trees become smaller, and the views open up.
The trail becomes steeper today, but the distance is shorter. You walk slowly and take time to enjoy the beautiful views of the mountain.
You will start to feel the altitude. Some people may feel a mild headache. It is important to drink a lot of water and walk slowly (“pole pole”).
You arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon. From here, you can see amazing views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The air is colder, especially at night.

Elevation: 3,840 m → 4,630 m → 3,960 m
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours

This is a very important day for acclimatization.
You start by climbing up to Lava Tower. This is a high point (4,630 m). The walk is slow because the air is thinner. Some people may feel tired or have mild altitude symptoms.
After reaching Lava Tower, you rest and have lunch.
Then you go down to Barranco Camp. This is called “climb high, sleep low.” It helps your body adjust to the altitude and increases your chance to reach the summit.
Barranco Camp is one of the most beautiful camps on the mountain. You will see the famous Barranco Wall and great views of the mountain.

Trek to Lava Tower and descend to Barranco Camp
Elevation: 3,960 m → 4,035 m → 4,673 m
Distance: 8–9 km
Hiking Time: 6–10 hours
Accommodation: Barafu Camp (tents)
You start the day by climbing the Barranco Wall. It looks steep, but it is safe and manageable. You will use your hands in some parts. Your guide will help you.
After the wall, the trail goes up and down through valleys. You pass Karanga Camp, where you may stop for lunch.
Then you continue climbing to Barafu Camp. This is your base camp for the summit.
You arrive in the afternoon. You eat an early dinner and rest. Your guide will brief you about the summit climb.
You go to sleep early because you will wake up around midnight.

Climb Barranco Wall and trek to Karanga Camp
Elevation: 4,673 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 m
Distance: 5 km up + 12 km down
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours total
Accommodation: Mweka Camp (tents)
This is the most difficult and most important day.
You wake up around midnight and start climbing in the dark with a headlamp. It is very cold, and the walk is slow and steep.
After many hours, you reach Stella Point at sunrise. From here, you continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
At the summit, you take photos and celebrate your success. This is a very special moment.
After a short time at the top, you start going down. You return to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp.
You will feel very tired but also very proud.

Elevation: 3,100 m → 1,640 m
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
After breakfast, you continue descending through the rainforest. The air becomes warmer, and walking is easier.
When you reach Mweka Gate, you receive your summit certificate.
Your driver will meet you and take you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. This is the end of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
