Plan an unforgettable journey to the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most stunning and ancient volcanic formations elevated at 3,962 meters. Situated on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro, this plateau showcases breathtaking high-altitude landscapes shaped by ancient lava flows and dramatic geological features.
Your adventure begins with an early morning departure—6:00 AM from Arusha or 7:30 AM from Moshi—followed by a scenic 2–3-hour drive to Londorossi Gate for registration and park formalities. From here, a short 30–45-minute transfer takes you to Murrum Barrier Gate, the starting point of your trek.
The hike covers 4 km over 2–3 hours, ascending to approximately 3,400 meters, where vast open plains, unique vegetation zones, and panoramic Kilimanjaro views create a memorable wilderness experience. This adventure offers the perfect blend of challenge, scenery, and nature immersion—ideal for trekkers seeking a taste of Kilimanjaro without summiting.
Itinerary
Your day starts early with pick-up from either Arusha or Moshi. Drive to Londorossi Gate for registration, then continue to Murrum Barrier for your hiking starting point. Begin your 4 km trek through alpine heather and volcanic terrain as you make your way toward the expansive Shira Plateau. Enjoy stunning views, unique flora, and geological formations. After exploring the plateau and having lunch, descend to Murrum Barrier for your return drive back to Moshi or Arusha.
